The Challenge

Freemen’s School approached us during a pivotal moment in their evolution. With the senior school restructuring to begin at Year 7 and a rapidly changing admissions landscape, they needed a brand film that would redefine public perception and speak directly to both parents and prospective students.

They were facing a growing challenge: standing out in an increasingly competitive independent school market while gently shifting perceptions of being too formal or traditional. Their goal was not just visibility, but resonance. They wanted to move away from traditional school messaging – not “we want you,” or “here’s what we offer, but “this is how it feels to be be here.

The existing perception of Freemen’s as academically elite but slightly formal no longer reflected the community they’d become: one that’s warm, vibrant, progressive, and proudly unpretentious.

The brief was bold:
Let’s surprise people. Show them who we really are. If people think they know Freemen’s, it’s time to think again.

Our Approach

We designed a film that would feel like memory, not marketing. A narrative journey built around lived experience, not sales messaging. It’s not a tour, it’s not a pitch, it’s a reflective walk through a student’s time at Freemen’s, from first-day nerves to final results, seen through their eyes.

Told in a warm, reflective voiceover and built around real locations, real students, and real experiences, the film weaves together key themes:

  • Belonging
  • Curiosity and creativity
  • Collaboration and leadership
  • Freedom to be yourself

Our visual language reflects this. We used immersive point-of-view shots, match cuts, whip pans, and vibrant colour splashes to create energy and emotional rhythm. The film ends where it begins, with an envelope and a glance to camera, as if to say: “You thought you knew this story. You didn’t.

Rather than producing a traditional promotional film, we delivered a strategic brand piece that aligned with the school’s evolving tone of voice and values – giving Freemen’s a creative asset that reflects who they are and who they’re becoming.

“We didn’t want a typical school film. We wanted something that would stand out from the crowd and feel genuinely authentic. Eye Film completely understood that and came up with the idea of filming from a point-of-view (POV) perspective. It was a bold creative choice, but it perfectly aligned with what we were trying to achieve.”

Production Highlights

Filming took place over three days on campus, with a small, nimble crew blending into the day-to-day rhythm of school life. To stay efficient, Tom and Jack worked together a week ahead of the main shoot to capture test footage and refine exact framing for key sequences — a vital step that allowed us to move faster on shoot day without sacrificing quality. This pre-planning gave us space to execute more ambitious visuals under pressure and ensured we could maintain momentum across a tightly packed schedule. From DT workshops to music rehearsals, morning runs to drama performances, we moved through classrooms, playgrounds, and open spaces to capture Freemen’s in full flow.

We shot handheld and close-up where we needed intimacy, switched to gimbals and drones for perspective and energy, and used POV shots and match cuts to bring out the film’s recurring theme of transformation. Directing the film also required a more sensitive, student-led approach — we focused on getting the pupils comfortable in front of the camera, often stepping back to allow them to lead scenes naturally. This approach was a departure from more controlled or interviewer-led shoots, and it gave the final film a looseness and spontaneity that helped it feel genuinely student-centred. To capture authentic reactions, we rigged the FX3 to a POV helmet and had the students wear it themselves, allowing us to capture more natural, immersive reactions from their perspective. Every scene was designed to feel observed, not orchestrated — full of real interactions, movement, and moments of surprise. Our goal was to give the viewer the feeling of growing up inside the school, not just visiting it.

Technical Notes:
  • Shot on Sony FX6, Sony FX3, POV helmet mount, GoPro Hero 11, DJI  RS3 Pro gimbal, and DJI Mini 3 Pro drone
  • Locations included DT labs, music hall, drama studios, boarding house, sports fields, Junior playground, and Sixth Form centre
  • Cast are all real Freemen’s staff and students

“We’d worked with Eye Film before, so we already knew they were a safe pair of hands – creative, reliable, and great with staff and pupils alike. This time was no different. The process was genuinely collaborative – from the earliest conversations, they took the time to understand us, challenge our thinking in helpful ways, and bring fresh ideas to the table. They were incredibly organised, calm and professional during filming – which is no small feat when you’re navigating multiple locations, dozens of pupils across all age groups, and the added technical and creative challenge of shooting in POV.”

The Outcome

The final film launched in June 2025 and quickly became the centrepiece of Freemen’s brand communications. It now anchors their website homepage, features at open days, supports email and admissions campaigns, and has been shared widely across social media in full and shortened formats.  But beyond its functionality, the real success came from how it made people feel, internally as much as externally. During a school-wide briefing, the film was shown to staff for the first time. It was met with spontaneous applause. “Refreshing and uplifting,” one teacher wrote. “The first time I’ve really seen the whole school captured like this.

“After launching the film at morning briefing, we were overwhelmed with messages from colleagues saying how deeply it resonated with them. Many commented on how well it encapsulated Freemen’s – not just what we do, but who we are. We think a few tears may even have been shed. As our Headmaster put it, very simply and very perfectly: ‘It’s just us.’”

From the outset, our aim was to help Freemen’s tell a story that felt authentic, not just to prospective parents, but to the people who live and breathe the school every day. And it resonated. As one of the leadership team put it:

"We absolutely love it – it’s perfect. Genuinely different from the usual school videos, and it captures who we are and what we offer."

On LinkedIn, the video drew praise from staff, alumni and external educators alike.

  • “Hits the right spots.”
  • “Outstanding school, great video.”
  • “One of the best promo films I’ve seen in a long time.”

ALL ORGANIC. ALL IMMEDIATE.

In terms of impact, the school reports increased engagement across their digital channels and a measurable uplift in sign-ups for upcoming open events. The full-length version is now a flagship feature of their website, while the social cutdown has become a powerful asset across digital campaigns. It’s already their most-viewed video on Vimeo, which tells its own story.

It’s been a project we’re proud to have led, and a great example of what’s possible when a school has a clear sense of identity and the trust to let it come through onscreen.

The best work happens when a school knows how it wants to be seen and trusts you fully to bring that vision to life. Freemen’s gave us that trust, and it shaped everything.
