Delivered by Eye Film, supported by the ScreenSkills Unscripted TV Skills Fund

OVERVIEW

Whether you’re working as a researcher, assistant producer or producer/director in unscripted TV, confidence behind the camera is essential. Over two intensive days, you’ll develop practical, real-world shooting skills with the Sony FX3 and FX6 — learning how to set up and operate the cameras, light and record interviews, capture creative B-roll, and plan sequences for the edit. You’ll also explore how AI tools can support pre-production and filming workflows, and how to troubleshoot challenges on location.

Training is delivered in small groups by working industry professionals with extensive broadcast credits. Each bootcamp includes a post-course 1:1 review session with your trainer and access to an online Padlet of resources, tips and opportunities. By the end of the course, you’ll have the technical knowledge and confidence to deliver broadcast-ready content, whether you’re stepping up from Shooting AP to PD or expanding your self-shooting role on productions. This training programme is funded by the ScreenSkills Unscripted TV Skills Fund which invests in training for the unscripted workforce thanks to contributions from broadcasters, SVoDs and production companies.

THE TRAINERS

This course is bespoke and has been designed specifically for this ScreenSkills course, but has been developed by Eye Films’ production team after many years of running two day camera workshops.  It will be delivered by a team of three highly experienced industry professionals, each bringing a wealth of practical knowledge from broadcast, commercial, and educational settings. The lead trainer will be Cameron Black, supported by Andy Prosser and Max Knaapen – all of whom have worked extensively across unscripted formats, with deep technical expertise in Sony camera systems and hands-on production.

Cameron Black – Lead Trainer

Cameron is a director, camera operator, and editor with over 8 years of experience across both broadcast and commercial projects. His work spans the full production pipeline – from scripting and storyboarding through to delivery – and he brings a calm, adaptive approach whether collaborating closely with clients or shooting on the fly in fast-paced, unscripted environments.

Cameron has delivered broadcast content for the BBC and Channel 4, and his commercial work has been recognised with multiple industry awards. Alongside production, he has played a key role in Eye Film’s training provision over the past five years – leading one-to-one coaching, mentoring, and classroom sessions for new and early-career filmmakers. He has also worked closely with the Media Learning Company (MLC) at City College Norwich, where he delivered bespoke technical training and provided ongoing support to students across documentary, promo, and branded content projects. Cameron’s training style combines technical precision with real-world relevance, ensuring that participants leave with the confidence to shoot at a broadcast-ready standard.

He is fully proficient in Sony FX6, FX3, FX9 and FS7 workflows, as well as Canon DSLRs and the Adobe Creative Suite.

Christopher Sharman

DOP Christopher Sharman started his career in Studio Operations at ITV in the UK, before spending five years shooting news and current affairs documentaries as a BBC staff cameraman.  Freelance since 2007, he has successfully transitioned into narrative and commercial work, while developing a reputation as a sought-after documentary DOP.
Christopher’s work has taken him around the world shooting prestige documentaries for the BBC, National Geographic, PBS and ARTE amongst many others, alongside commercial work for well known brands such as EA Sports FIFA, Sainsbury’s, Adnams, and Boux Avenue. His narrative portfolio includes horror feature ‘Eden Lodge’ (Signature Entertainment), award-winning short films ‘Gas’, ’Inappropriate’, and ’HOLD’, and worldwide festival hit ‘The Ghost Of Peter Sellers’ for director Peter Medak (‘Breaking Bad’/‘The Wire’/‘The Krays’).
Alongside his professional work, Chris has occasionally taken the opportunity to guest-lecture in cinematography at NUA.  He has also delivered workshops at BAFTA,  the BBC, and with young people at the Prince’s Trust, as well as Norfolk-based charities Cinema City, Reel Connections, and Make Play Connect.

Max Knaapen

Max is a documentary filmmaker and director of photography with a strong technical background and a passion for authentic, emotionally driven storytelling. He began his career through the Media Learning Company, a hands-on, industry-led training course supported by Eye Film, and quickly progressed into a producer role at a high-end post-production house working on music videos and visual content for global artists.

He later joined Eye Film, where he worked extensively as a camera operator, editor and director across broadcast documentaries, branded content and commercial campaigns. During this time, Max also developed the company’s training delivery — helping early-career filmmakers build confidence with camera operation, shot planning and post-production.

Having spent 5 years in Amsterdam Max has just returned to Norwich and works as a freelance cinematographer and DP across Europe, shooting commercials, branded content and documentaries for global clients. He has experience with a wide range of camera systems, including Sony FX6, RED, ARRI, and Blackmagic, but specialises in Sony workflows — with the FX6 being his go-to camera for its versatility and image quality.

Max brings a calm, collaborative presence to the training environment and will support technical setup, group exercises, and one-to-one coaching throughout the programme.
